In the spirit of positivity
Hello friends,
The world is opening up again, and I'm both relieved and anxious. I desperately want to go out and do things and see people again, but I know that this virus isn't gone, and I'm still vulnerable.
I cried a lot this week. Between isolation and MS symptoms and my period, I was a hot mess lying in a bed of self-pity. And to be honest, I had no desire to write this newsletter this week. But now that I'm writing it, my perspective has shifted. This newsletter isn't for me; it's for you. And while I believe it's necessary to write about the messier parts of life, I know it's essential to have balance. So in the spirit of positivity, here are some good things that happened this week.
NASCAR is back. I don't know how many of you are NASCAR fans, let alone sports fans in general, but this was huge for me. Seeing cars at the track again (not to mention twice in one week!) left me giddy. I know the poetry/sports crossover fandom has to be slim, so if any of you are sports fans, let me know!
I got a haircut. Going out into the world was a little scary, but leaving my house for the first time in months felt phenomenal. There was only one other client in the salon, and they did temp checks and required hand sanitizer for anyone who came in the door. Everyone wore masks, which was weird but comforting. The whole excursion was an affirmation that, at least in certain areas, we can start opening back up while staying safe. Also, feeling good on the outside gave me a leg up on feeling better on the inside.
I gathered a group of like-minded ladies into a little poetry collective called the Sad Girl Poet Society. These women are here for me when I need them, and they make me a better writer. We've even got a hashtag and everything. So check out #sadgirlpoetsociety on Instagram, and use it to tag your own sad poetry. Let's make this a thing.
So there you go. Even when the world feels like it's ending, there are still moments of sunshine. I hope you find your own break in the clouds this week.
See you next week,
Yardena
