I similarly had the "Wait, but what stops the bridge from opening randomly?" feeling when crossing drawbridges as a kid.

Bridges are a topic unto themselves -- proof that human beings will exert great influence over land, resources, and technology to build things that if you think about it, are absolutely insane. Rational, but insane. Awe-inspiring, but insane.

This was very beautiful, such a sweet collection of images, scenes from the landscape of your memory leading to a brilliant causeway to the present, and a poignant transition to "I'm afraid but I'm home." I'm glad to see you and yours are safe but I am moved by a quiet resolve at the end of these wonderful words.

Wow. Wow. Your writing and this story - superb - love the metaphors and tie-in to the present. While i'm Midwestern born and raised, my partner is from New Jersey so knows hurricanes, and I read him your piece as I knew he'd also enjoy it. Well done and am sending safe vibes your way.

Thank you so much! I wasn’t sure where this piece was going until the storm showed up lol. I’m quite happy with how it turned out though.

Great piece! The images in it are wonderful. I especially loved "They swam over one another, weaving a living tapestry of dull greys, greens, and blues." I can tell that the beach stirs up feelings of both comfort and vulnerability for you--I feel the same.

It sounds like perhaps you're "on the drawbridge" of Hurricane Ian now? May you feel solid concrete beneath you again soon!!

Thinking of you and everyone in Ian's path.

Thank you! My area avoided the worst of things. I can only hope the power doesn’t stay off for an entire week like with Irma.

Right there with you. Be alert and stay aware, but I want to know how things unfold.

The power went a few hours ago, and we should get quite a bit of wind and rain over the next 12 hours. I sent this out right before we lost power lol. Luckily the storm made landfall south of me so my area shouldn’t get too much damage.

That's great to hear; I'm still witcha! I was in West Palm Beach when Andrew made landfall south of me. If not apparent damage, watch out for downed cables.
